William Eddie Jr. has been a fixture in the Detroit basketball scene for many years. In 2006, he entered the college coaching ranks as an assistant coach at Central Michigan University.
Eddie had served as co-founder and president of the Team Detroit AAU program from 1992 until this past summer. Head coach Ernie Zeigler had served as the head coach of Team Detroit from 1992-97.
“We feel very fortunate to have an experienced coach like William on staff,” Zeigler said. “He has an abundance of contacts and relationships in the Detroit area, and he’ll play an integral part of our recruiting in Detroit, Flint, and Saginaw. He thrives on building personal relationships with players, and that makes him a great addition to our program.”
A majority of Eddie’s focus will be recruiting, along with working with CMU’s perimeter players. He also has academic oversight, team camps, and compliance liaison responsibilities.
Eddie helped Team Detroit to the 2005 All-American Cage Classic championship in Ohio and a regional championship for the event in 2006. The 2006 squad also advanced to the Sweet 16 of the Las Vegas Big Time Tournament.
Eddie served as a part-time talent scout in the Midwest for the Atlanta Hawks during the 2005-06 season.
A two-year letterwinner at Northern Michigan University, William also played two seasons of basketball overseas in San Marino, Italy (1975-76).
He began his coaching career as an assistant varsity coach at Detroit Cody from 1976-88. There he coached Zeigler, who played for the Comets. Eddie has also served as a junior high boys’ and girls’ coach at Alonzo W. Bates Academy in Detroit.
Eddie has 25 years of business experience working for three major insurance companies, including AAA Automobile Club of Michigan, Allstate, and Farm Bureau.
William received a bachelor’s degree in education from NMU in 1976.
He married Pamela Montague in October 2006. William has four children Montresa (21), William III (18), Henrietta (14), and Georgia (10). William III is a freshman with the Chippewas this season.
In his spare time, William enjoys reading, bowling, and watching movies.
