MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University head football coach Brian Kelly will be inducted into the Assumption College Alumni-Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, Aug. 26 Kelly, entering his third season as the head coach at CMU, was a two-year captain and two-time all-conference selection as a linebacker at Assumption. He graduated as the school's all-time leading tackler and helped lead the Greyhounds to an 8-3 overall record and the national semifinals in 1981. Kelly, who earned his bachelor's degree in political science in 1983, spent the 1983-87 seasons as an assistant on the football staff. He also served as the head softball coach from 1984-87, posting a record of 64-54 and guiding his final two teams to the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. Kelly concluded his tenure as the winningest coach in Assumption softball history. He departed Assumption for Grand Valley State, where he moved from graduate assistant to head coach in just four seasons. In 13 years as the head coach at GVSU, he posted a 118-35-2 record and led the Lakers to Division II national titles in 2002 and 2003. Kelly is 10-12 in two seasons as the head coach at CMU. The Chippewas were 6-5 overall, 5-3 in the Mid-American Conference in 2005, their first winning mark since 1998. CMU's 10 wins over the past two years are the most in a two-year stretch since 1998-99. Kelly and the Chippewas open the 2006 campaign on Thursday, Aug. 31, hosting Boston College at 6 p.m. ESPN2 will televise the contest live to a national audience.
