MOUNT PLEASANT - Jim Tobin, captain of the 1976 Central Michigan University baseball team, will serve as the guest speaker at the baseball program's Meet the Chippewas event Saturday.
Tobin was a two-year letterman as a second baseman for the Chippewas and an Academic All-Mid-American Conference selection in 1976. He is currently a pharmaceutical representative for GlaxoSmithKline and lives in Grayling, Mich.
"Many of the past speakers at this event were former professional players," Tobin said. "I did not have the opportunity to play pro ball, so I want to help the current players understand that, even if they don't play professionally, the experience and lessons learned playing now will carry over to the business world as well."
Tobin helped lay the foundation for a program that become dominant in the late 1970s. CMU moved to the Division I level in 1972, and Tobin and his teammates were an integral part of the program's transition to the Division I level.
"It was a great honor to be able to play there and have that four-year experience of being around the guys and the coaches," Tobin said. "Coach Jaksa was a teammate of mine, and I had the opportunity to learn from great coaches like Dave Keilitz and Dean Kreiner."
Meet the Chippewas will begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3 at Boomer's Lounge in Mount Pleasant. Cost is $8, payable at the door. Those planning to attend are asked to RSVP to 989-774-1580 or email assistant coach Dave Barkholz at barkh1ds@cmich.edu.
CMU opens the 2007 season with a three-game series at UAB, Feb. 16-18.
