MOUNT PLEASANT – Central Michigan University head football coach Butch Jones has completed his coaching staff with the hiring of Paul Volero.
Volero will coach the Chippewas’ defensive linemen.
“I’ve had the opportunity to work with Paul the past two seasons at West Virginia, and what I’ve come to find out is that he’s a stickler for attention to detail and coaching the overall fundamentals of the defensive line position,” Jones said. “He also provides us with great resources in a number of our recruiting areas.”
Volero spent the last three seasons as the special teams quality control coach and academic graduate assistant at West Virginia. He was a part of the staff that led the Mountaineers to Big East Conference championships in 2004 and 2005 and victories in the Sugar Bowl and Gator Bowl the past two seasons.
In his role at WVU, Volero assisted with special teams breakdown and scheme implementation, along with monitoring the Mountaineers’ production on special teams. He also oversaw a variety of other duties relative to West Virginia’s special teams.
Volero began his coaching career at Glenville State College in West Virginia, coaching the defensive line during the 1996 season. Volero helped Glenville State to an NAIA national runner-up finish as a player in 1993.
Volero then served as the defensive coordinator at Miami Senior High School, North Miami Senior High School and Booker T. Washington High School in Florida from 1997-2002 before moving to the University of South Florida in 2003. He spent one season as the assistant strength coach and working with the defensive linemen at USF before assuming his most recent post at West Virginia.
Volero played collegiately at both Arizona Western College and Glenville State. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Nova Southeastern University in 2004 and was working toward a master’s at West Virginia.
Volero is the ninth and final member of CMU’s coaching staff. He joins Mike Bajakian (offensive coordinator/quarterbacks), Tim Banks (defensive coordinator), Mike Kolakowski (special teams coordinator/safeties), Zach Azzanni (assistant head coach/wide receivers), Don Mahoney (offensive line), Jeff Beckles (running backs), Max Glowacki (recruiting coordinator/tight ends) and Mark Elder (linebackers).
