Volleyball Wins the IUPUI Invitational.

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana Central Michigan University volleyball used a pair of victories on Sunday to capture a tournament title for the second-straight weekend by going 3-0 at the IUPUI Invitational.
The Chippewas opened the day with a 3-1 (30-21, 29-31, 30-24, 30-21) victory over Tennessee-Martin and captured the title with a 3-1 (30-26, 32-34, 30-27, 35-33) win over the host Jaguars. Kate Fissel was named the tournament MVP for the second-straight week and was joined by Whitney Evers on the all-tournament team.
CMU is now 6-0 this season and has won 18 of 21 games this season.
“This was a total team effort this weekend and I am happy with how we battled all tournament,” CMU head coach Erik Olson said. “Our defense really stepped up this weekend and that was a main reason we won this tournament. I also thought our offense was solid and proved some key points during the weekend.”
The featured match of the tournament came Sunday night as the Maroon and Gold took on IUPUI. The match was thrilling throughout with 52 ties and 25 lead changes in the four games with CMU securing the victory with a pair of kills by Fissel to end game four.
A trio of players powered the CMU offense against the Jaguars. Fissel had a match-high 25 kills while Whitney Evers tallied 24 kills and Sarah Warner has 16. Evers hit a match-high .611 with Fissel tallying a mark of .321. Setter Courtney Kersten dished out 73 assists while directing the Chippewas to a victory.
Four CMU players tallied double-digit dig totals with Alexis Lonneman leading the way with 22 digs. Lisa Johnson, Fissel and Warner all had 11 digs for the Chippewas. Up front, Evers tallied a team-high six blocks while Kaitlyn Hurt and Kelly Janisch added five rejections. Johnson had three service aces to lead the Maroon and Gold.
In the team stats, CMU tallied more kills (78-64), digs (75-61), service aces (9-7) and assists (75-61). The Chippewas also had a better hitting percentage, .246-.191. IUPUI did finish with more blocks, 16.0-14.0.
In the victory over Tennessee-Martin, CMU used a dominating service game to roll to a victory. The Chippewas finished with 15 aces compared to four by UT-Martin. Johnson led the Maroon and Gold with four aces while Kersten and Lonneman added three apiece.
On offense, it was Fissel again leading CMU with 21 kills and a .227 hitting percentage. Evers added 14 kills and hit .250 while Warner had 12 and Kersten added 52 assists.
Five players reached double-digits in digs on defense. Alexis Lonneman had a season-high 25 digs to lead CMU while Fissel was next with 12. Following those two was Warner with 11 and Johnson and Kersten with 10 digs. Hurt notched a team-high four blocks with Evers and Warner adding three apiece.
The Chippewas dominated the team stats with more kills (65-43), digs (75-59), aces (15-4), assists (57-38) and a better hitting percentage (.217-.136). UT-Martin did have more blocks, 13.0-7.0.
The Chippewas head south to the UCF Invitational next weekend. CMU opens the tournament with Montana State on Thursday, Sept. 6, at 4 p.m.
