TOLEDO, Ohio -- The Central Michigan volleyball team put together one of the best seasons in recent program history, and today the Chippewas were recognized for their accomplishments.
Head coach Erik Olson was named Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year and middle blocker Kaitlyn Schultz was named MAC Freshman of the Year.
In addition, senior Whitney Evers and Schultz earned first team All-MAC accolades, while junior Stephanie Budde garnered second team laurels. Schultz was also named a member of the MAC All-Freshman squad.
Schultz standout averaged 2.52 kills while hitting .353 during the regular season, the second-best mark overall in the league. She also hit .384 in MAC play, tops in the conference and paced the Chippewas in blocking with 90 total stuffs (0.87). She is just the second player in CMU history
to earn MAC Freshman of the Year honors (Meghan Moore, 2003).
Evers earned first team All-MAC honors this season after earning second team accolades each of her last two seasons. The Little Chute, Wis. native paced the Chippewas in kills at 3.00 and aces with 31. She was also third on the team in digs with 187 (1.82) and second in blocks with 71 (0.69). She is just the third Chippewa to earn either first or second team All-MAC accolades in three of her four seasons (Terri Phillion, first team 1980-82; Angie Henderson, first team 1984-85, second team 1983).
After spending her first two seasons as the understudy to two-time All-MAC setter Courtney Kersten, junior Stephanie Budde earned second team All-MAC honors in her first full year on the job. Budde tallied 10.75 assists per set overall and 11.15 in MAC matches. She’s also among the MAC elite serving, ranking seventh overall (0.30) and second in MAC action (0.41) in aces. Budde also chipped in 1.99 digs and 0.34 blocks this year.
Olson earns Coach of the Year honors for the first time in his career. He has turned around a Chippewas program that had struggled of late, including the biggest turnaround in MAC history (12.5 games) from the 2005 to 2006 seasons. The fifth-year head coach guided the Chippewas to their first 20-win season since 1985 a year ago, and is on the verge of posting back-to-back 20 win campaigns since 1984-85.
CMU also won its first postseason game since 1982 under Olson a year ago in a 3-2 decision over Toledo in the first round of the MAC Tournament.
The Chippewas will face Bowling Green in the quarterfinals of the 2008 MAC Tournament at the SeaGate Center in Toledo, Ohio at 11 a.m.
