Illinois-Chicago Tops Men's Basketball, 77-67

CHICAGO, Illinois A dominating effort by Illinois-Chicago center Scott VanderMeer in the second half led the Flames to a 77-67 victory over the Central Michigan University men’s basketball team on Saturday night in Chicago, Ill.
The Chippewas (2-3) led 35-33 at halftime but VanderMeer scored all 17 of his points in the second frame, going 5-for-7 from the field and 7-of-10 at the line. He also had six rebounds (nine total) and three blocks after the break. He helped UIC outrebound Central 41-28 for the game despite the Chippewas holding a one-rebound, 19-18, advantage at the half.
The Flames took control of the game midway through the second half. After an Adrian Hunter’s three cut UIC’s lead to one, 54-53, the Flames would go on a 14-0 run over the six minutes to take a commanding 68-53 lead. CMU would never get the lead below double digits. UIC shot 58.3 percent in the second half and was 14-for-18 at the free throw line.
CMU was led by Robbie Harman with 17 points including four three-pointers. Harman also had a team-high six assists and four steals. Chris Kellermann chipped in 13 points and a team-high six boards despite battling foul trouble. Jeremy Allen and Hunter each added 12 tallies.
The Flames were led by Josh Mayo with 20 points while Tori Boyd joined VanderMeer with 17 points. VanderMeer’s nine rebounds were a game-high and Spencer Stewart had a game best eight assists.
Illinois-Chicago finished the game shooting 51.1 percent from the field while CMU had a mark of 39.0 percent. UIC was 23-of-34 at the line and 6-for-11 from three with CMU going 11-for-20 from the strip and 10-for-29 from beyond the arc. The Flames had more blocks (4-1) while CMU tallied more steals (11-6) and fewer turnovers (16-12). Both teams had 15 assists.
