MOUNT PLEASANT Robbie Harman’ s career high 21 points was not enough as Illinois State pulled out a 72-69 victory over the Central Michigan University men’s basketball on Wednesday evening in Rose Arena.
The Chippewas fell to 3-6 while Illinois State remained undefeated at 10-0.
The contest was in doubt the entire way with CMU rallying back in the final minutes to pull within one with nine second left. An ISU free throw made it a two-point game with Harman missing a three-pointer with four seconds left which would have given CMU the lead. Illinois State hit a single free throw with 00.3 left to give it the three-point victory.
All Harman’s points came on three pointers as he went 7-for 14 from behind the arc. The junior point guard added four rebounds and three assists. Three other CMU players reach double figures with Jacolby Hardiman adding 17, Jeremy Allen 10 and Jordan Bitzer 10. It was Bitzer’s first game this season after sitting out the first semester. Marcus Van posted a game high 13 board to go along with eight points and three blocks
The Redbirds were led by Osiris Eldridge with 18 points. Guard Lloyd Phillips added 15 points while Dinma Odiakosa had 14 and Brandon Sampay scored 11. Odiakosa led the squad with nine board and Eldridge tallied a game-high three steals.
The Chippewas jumped out to an early 12-3 lead behind a pair of Harman three pointers. CMU remained ahead the rest of the half with ISU slowly chipping away to get within one at the half, 29-28. The CMU defense held the Redbirds to just a 29.0 shooting percentage but the Chippewas hit just 38.5 of their own shots.
CMU continued to control the game in the first 10 minutes of the second half but a 9-0 ISU run made it 55-50 with seven minutes left. The Chippewas would continue to battle down the stretch but could never regain the lead as Illinois State shot 62.5 percent (15-of-24) in the second frame to CMU’s 43.3.
The Redbird won the rebounding battle, 37-31, and had more assists, 12-9. ISU also tallied a better shooting percentage, .436-.411. CMU had more steals, 7-5, and blocks, 4-2 while also shooting a better percentage at the line, .737-731, and from behind the arc, .375-.333.
