MOUNT PLEASANT Mid-American Conference-leading Kent State handed Central Michigan its first home conference loss of the season on Tuesday night, 79-66, in Rose Arena.
The Golden Flashes (20-5, 9-2 MAC) jumped out to a 12-2 lead and never trailed in the contest. The win gave KSU its 20th victory of the season marking 10 straight 20-win campaigns.
“It was disappointing to lose our first home conference game,” coach Ernie Zeigler said. “We have to learn from it and not allow it to deter us from what we are trying to do as we continue conference play. We didn’t capitalize on the things we could control. Our margin of error was so small and we made too many mistakes. Kent State shot the ball well and did an excellent job of attacking the basket.”
The Golden Flashes shot 50 percent from the floor compared to CMU’s 37 percent.
“We were hurried around the basket and that put us in a hole,” Zeigler said.
Leading the way for KSU was junior college transfer Al Fisher who scored a career-high 28 points while dishing out seven assists. He was 11-for-15 from the foul line.
CMU (10-13, 5-6 MAC) was led by Giordan Watson’s 20 points while Marcus Van just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 boards.
The Golden Flashed led by as many as 10 in the first half before settling on a 35-29 lead at the half. KSU pushed its lead back up to double figures in the second half but Central managed to cut it to an eight-point game with 1:53 left and that’s as close as CMU could get.
CMU now heads to Eastern Michigan on Saturday, Feb. 16, to battle the Eagles. Tipoff in the Convocation Center is set for 2p.m.
NOTES:
Giordan Watson’s two three-pointers move him into a tie for second on CMU’s career chart with David Webber. Both Chippewa guards have 183 career treys.
Giordan Watson’s 20 points move him up a notch to fourth on CMU’s career scoring chart past Ben Kelso. Watson now has 1,642 points.
Giordan Watson now needs four three-pointers, six assists and seven steals to set CMU career records in each category.
Marcus Van’s double-digit rebounding game was his second of the season. He is the only CMU player with a double-figure rebounding game this year.
CMU went 3-3 versus the East Division during the regular season.
