SPRINGFIELD, Mo. A pair of 20-point scorers led Missouri State to a 90-76 win over Central Michigan in an ESPNU BracketBusters matchup on Saturday night in the Hammonds Student Center.
Dale Lamberth had 25 points and Devin Mitchell 23 for the Bears out of the Missouri Valley Conference. MSU shot 59 percent from the floor while the Chippewas were close behind at 50 percent.
The big difference in the game was at the line where Missouri State shot 43 free throws to CMU’s 10 and the Bears used the freebies to pull away in the end.
“Offensively, we made shots and we did a nice job sharing the ball,” coach Ernie Zeigler said. “But, we had costly turnovers in times and situations where they were too costly.”
CMU trailed by 11 with 7:18 remaining but Giordan Watson hit deep three-pointers on three straight possessions to cut it to a three-point game, 69-66, with 5:52 remaining.
A pair of Chippewa miscues allowed the Bears to bump it back up to a seven-point game and MSU scored 13 of its final 17 points at the stripe in the final three minutes.
Watson scored a team-high 17 points off the bench to lead CMU while Marcus Van recorded the Chippewas’ first double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 boards.
Also hitting twin figures for CMU were Chris Kellermann with a season-high 16 points, including four three-pointers, and Jeremy Allen with 15.
Missouri State went 33-for-43 from the line as both Lamberth (12) and Mitchell (11) shot more foul shots individually than the entire Chippewa team (10) combined.
CMU drained 11 treys at a .440 clip but the Chippewas were outrebounded by eight, 30-22. Missouri State made 5-of-11 three-point attempts for a .455 mark.
The Chippewas return to Mid-American Conference play on Saturday, March 1, when CMU travels to Northern Illinois. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. CST (3 p.m. in Michigan).
NOTES:
Giordan Watson set a new CMU career three-pointers record by draining No. 187 in the game. He entered the contest tied for the record with Sander Scott (1989-93).
Chris Kellermann recorded his 100th career three-pointer in the game. He drained four on the night to give him 102 in his career. With five more the junior will move into the top 10 in CMU history.
Marcus Van recorded CMU’s first double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. It was his third double-figure rebounding game of the season. He is the third active Chippewa with a career double-double. Justin Blevins and Eddie Spencer each have one.
Giordan Watson recorded his 50th steal of the season with ties for ninth on CMU’s single-season chart. With one more he will tie his career high which he established as both a freshman and a junior.
Chris Kellermann’s 16 points and four three-pointers were both season highs.
The Chippewas are now 3-2 in BracketBuster games. CMU won the first three at home but has dropped two straight road contests.
The Chippewas’ 11 three-pointers were one shy of team season high.
In CMU’s two games this week, Marcus Van averaged 15.0 points and 9.5 rebounds while shooting .684 from the floor.
