MOUNT PLEASANT -- Sean Hoorelbeke blasted a pair of home runs and Steve Teno tossed his second complete game of the season as the Central Michigan baseball team took the finale of a three-game series against Ohio, 7-2, at Theunissen Stadium on Monday.
The first of Hoorelbeke's blasts cleared the center field fence and the second was crushed well past the left field wall. Teno (3-2) scattered seven hits, allowing two runs while walking two and striking out four.
Hoorelbeke's solo home run leading off the second inning gave CMU a 1-0 lead, making it just the fifth time all season the Chippewas scored the first run.
Teno faced just one more than the minimum through the first four innings. A leadoff double by Brandon Besl in the second was his only blemish in the opening four frames.
Central scored three in the fourth after loading the bases without the benefit of a hit. Hoorelbeke walked with one away and after James Teas struck out, Casey Ingle reached on an error and Jeff Helps was hit by a pitch. After Tyler Kipke fell behind 0-2, he worked the count even before lacing a ball into right center. The center fielder Matt Stiffler dove but the ball got past him to the wall, clearing the bases and putting Kipke on third with a three-run triple.
The Chippewas added a run in the fifth on Hoorelbeke's second home run of the game and another in the sixth on a two-out RBI single by Brendan Emmett.
Ohio finally got to Teno in the eighth. Back-to-back singles greeted the Chippewa left-hander and the Bobcats manufactured a pair of runs to cut the lead to 6-2. CMU would get a run back in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by Emmett, his third hit and second RBI in the contest.
Central (6-13, 1-2 MAC) avoided being swept in a Mid-AMerican Conference home series for the first time since 1999 after Ohio (8-9, 2-1 MAC) had taken the first two of the set. The Chippewas will return to action on Wednesday at Theunissen Stadium against Oakland.
