MOUNT PLEASANT -- Members of the Central Michigan University basketball family took a break from draining three-pointers to concentrate on draining putts last month at the 12th Annual Alumni and Friends Golf Outing.
The event was held at Bucks Run in Mount Pleasant on July 16 and more than 80 participants played in the 18-hole scramble.
A couple of current Chippewas were on the winning team as Chris Kellermann and Brandon Ford teamed up with their fathers, Kevin and Randy, to shoot 15-under.
Other former Chippewa players and coaches who came back for the event included assistant coaches Dave Ginsberg and Walt Schneider and former players Dan Schell, Justin Blevins, John Kingsnorth, James Turner, Dave Moyer, Jeff Seeley, Jim Murray and Derek Boldon.
“It’s good to have this interaction which supports the family atmosphere of our program,” recent alum Justin Blevins said. “Our fans and our supporters are what drive us as players. It’s good to give back to them too.”
The event included a live and silent auction with all proceeds benefiting the men’s basketball program.
Ginsberg enjoyed coming down for the event from Traverse City. A CMU alum with two degrees, he was an assistant at CMU from 1975 to 1991 under both Dick Parfitt and Charlie Coles.
“It’s a terrific event,” Ginsberg said. “I always look forward to it because you get people excited about helping with the program. I saw a lot of people here that I haven’t seen in a long time. It’s just a way to keep the interest going and it’s a way to help financially.”
Ginsberg is the head coach at St. Francis High School in Traverse City and he travels the country doing motivational speaking engagements. He said it would be great to have more former players come to the annual golf outing.
“You’ve got to constantly work these guys,” he said. “I know there are a lot of Central Michigan basketball players helping in a variety of ways.”
As far as championships go, Ginsberg thinks head coach Ernie Zeigler is on the right track.
“Fortunately, I was a part of some championships. But, those were really hard things to accomplish,” he said. “I think Coach Zeigler is doing things the right way so I want to support him while he’s doing them.”
