MOUNT PLEASANT -- The first home stand of the season for the Central Michigan volleyball program will be short-lived.
The Chippewas (6-5) play a pair of Mid-American Conference matches on the road after they wrap up the non-conference slate on Tuesday.
The Chippewas host Illinois-Chicago Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in Rose Arena. After that, Central opens up MAC play on the road against Ball State Friday night and Toledo on Saturday. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
Central is undefeated in five previous matches against Illinois-Chicago. This is the Chippewas’ first meeting with the Flames since 2003; Central won that match 3-0.
Central is 27-32 all-time against Ball State. The Chippewas won both meetings with the Cardinals in 2007, winning 3-0 each time.
The Chippewas played the Rockets three times last season and CMU won all three, ballooning their series lead to 35-18. The last meeting was a 3-2 Central victory in the opening round of the MAC Tournament.
Live stats are available on cmuchippewas.com, and video streaming will be made available to CMU Sports Zone subscribers.
Home Court Advantage - CMU lost its home opener for the first time under fifth year head coach Erik Olson against Michigan State on Saturday. The Chippewas have not lost consecutive home games since the final three home matches of the 2006 season.
Chart Climbers - Senior opposite hitter Whitney Evers registered her 1,000th career kill on Saturday against Michigan State. She now has 1,006 as a Chippewa, 63 behind Christine Gruszynski (1993-96) for No. 10 all-time in CMU history. Kate Fissel has already breached the top-10, and is now No. 7 on the list with 1,127. She is 138 kills behind No. 6 Terri Phillion-Dulude (1979-82) who has 1,265. The outside hitter recorded her 1,000th career kill in last year’s MAC Tournament victory over Toledo. Senior opposite hitter Sarah Warner needs just 160 kills to join the duo as 1,000 kill club members.
Stuff It - In addition to approaching the all-time kills list, Whitney Evers is already among the program’s best in blocks. Her 26 stops this season give her 382 for her career, good enough for sixth among CMU alumnae. Twenty-three of those blocks are assists, giving her 324 in her four seasons as a starter. She now ranks No. 4 on that list, and her 58 solo blocks are one shy of tying her for 10th on yet another all-time leaderboard.
Gotta Snap the Skid - CMU has lost four in a row after winning six of its first seven matches in 2008.
Non-Conference Success - With a win today, CMU would clinch a winning non-conference record for the third consecutive season under head coach Erik Olson. Prior to the streak, CMU hadn’t put together a winning non-conference record since 2001.
All-Time Against the Horizon League - The Chippewas hold a 35-14 overall record against current members of the Horizon League.
