MOUNT PLEASANT -- A second respected college basketball publication has tabbed the Central Michigan men's basketball program as the favorite in the West Division in their yearly preview publication.
Lindy’s college basketball preview voiced the same opinion as counterpart Blue Ribbon Magazine in favoring the Chippewas.
Lindy’s has the rest of the division quite different as compared to Blue Ribbon however. Lindy’s expects CMU to top Ball State (second) for the crown, followed by Eastern Michigan (third) Northern Illinois (fourth), Western Michigan (fifth) and Toledo (sixth).
In Blue Ribbon’s opinion, CMU is listed ahead of instate foes Western Michigan (second) and Eastern Michigan (third), with Northern Illinois (fourth), Ball State (fifth) and Toledo (sixth) rounding out the West Division standings.
The Chippewas return three starters from last year's team that earned a share of the MAC West Division crown. Seniors Robbie Harman, Jordan Bitzer and Chris Kellermann give the Maroon and Gold a deadly trio of scorers and a veteran presence on the court.
Bitzer earned second team NABC All-District honors last season after averaging 12.1 points, 4.8 boards and 2.1 assists while leading the Chippewas with 47 steals. Harman started all 31 games a season ago and led the MAC with 72 three-pointers made, the fifth-most in CMU history. Kellermann was CMU's leading scorer at 14.4 points to go with 5.6 boards before a foot injury seven games in ended his season.
The Maroon and Gold open the 2009-10 season with three straight home games, starting with Princeton on Nov. 14.
