Longwood Blanks Field Hockey, 1-0

The contest was the 10th time this season that the Chippewas (4-10, 2-4 Mid-American) have held an opponent to two goals or less.
The Lancers got on the board just 5:27 into the contest when Amanda Babineau pounced on a rebound and tapped it in to give Longwood an early 1-0 lead. Longwood outshot Central, 7-6, in the first half while the Chippewas owned a 9-2 edge in penalty corners.
"This was a disappointing loss," head coach Cristy Freese said. "We came out flat today after yesterday's big win. We have talked about developing consistency each match and we weren't able to do that."
Longwood came out of the break and fired the first four shots of the frame, but was unable to add to its lead. The Maroon and Gold began to control play as the half wore on, outshooting the Lancers, 6-1, in the final 27:59 of the match. Unfortunately, CMU was unable to crack LU keeper Erin Bolinger.
"Offensively, we were able to create some chances as the match went on," Freese said. "Unfortunately, we were not able to get much going off our penalty corner. Longwood did a nice job taking away our options in those situations. I felt they were a little more aggressive to the ball than we were today."
Both teams fired 12 shots apiece, including seven on goal, in the contest. Central owned a decisive, 16-6, advantage in penalty corners.
Melinda Curran started in goal for the Chippewas and turned aside six of the seven shots that came her direction.
CMU returns to the turf next Saturday when it takes on Kent State in Kent, Ohio.
