KENT, Ohio — A first-half lead evaporated for the Central Michigan field hockey team as Kent State scored five unanswered goals to hand the Chippewas a 5-2 loss on Saturday.
The match gives the Golden Flashes a season sweep over the Chippewas, who fall to 4-11 (2-5 Mid-American).
CMU’s defense held high-scoring KSU off the board for most of the first half and Kelly Jordan put the Maroon and Gold in front, 1-0, when she buried a shot from the top of the attacking circle at the 26:18 mark.
“We started the match out well defensively,” head coach Cristy Freese said. “Kelly made a nice shot and gave us the lead, but Kent was not phased by the goal.”
Kent State evened the score 28 seconds later when Debbie Bell tapped in a crossing feed from Laurie Wilkins. Bell found the back of the net once again in the 29th minute to give the Golden Flashes a 2-1 lead.
KSU’s Rachel Miller added to the Kent lead with two goals of her own before halftime, making it a 4-1 contest at the break.
Bell completed her hat trick to put Kent up, 5-1, just 4:25 into the second half, giving the Golden Flashes five unanswered goals.
Kim Erasmus scored her first goal of the season with 10:28 remaining to bring the Chippewas within three. Tara Schiltz assisted on the play.
“We need to regroup as a unit for tomorrow,” Freese said. “It is hard to judge whether Kent’s goals affected us or if they just made good plays.”
Erasmus’ tally was as close as CMU got in the final frame as KSU owned a 20-9 advantage in shots and a 7-6 edge in penalty corners.
Melinda Curran got the call in goal for CMU and made eight saves.
The Chippewas head to Athens, Ohio for a Sunday afternoon contest against the Ohio Bobcats beginning at 1 p.m.
