TOLEDO, Ohio -- Despite some big contributions from individuals, the Central Michigan volleyball team was edged by the Toledo Rockets, 3-2, at Savage Arena in Mid-American Conference play on Friday.
Freshman Katie Schuette finished with 11 kills, 23 digs, three aces and hit .242. Freshman Val DeWeerd hit .353 with seven kills and sophomore Kaitlyn Schultz had 13 kills in 23 swings (.522).
But the Chippewas hit just .227 as a team, .062 in the final two sets, and the Rockets claimed the come-from-behind victory.
Five members of the Maroon and Gold finished with double-figure digs and the Chippewas had 104 as a squad. Senior Alexis Lonneman had a team-high 25, Schuette had 23, senior Stephanie Budde 13, sophomore Kelsey Detweiler 12 and junior Lisa Johnson 12.
Budde finished with 45 assists and senior Kaitlyn Hurt added a team-best four blocks.
CMU claimed the first set, 25-20, but Toledo responded with a 25-23 victory to even the match at one apiece.
A 25-23 victory in the third set put the Chippewas (14-9, 7-6 MAC) on the verge of victory, but the Rockets held CMU to a .152 hitting percentage in the fourth set and a -.158 clip in the fifth frame, claiming 25-19 and 15-11 victories.
The loss drops the Maroon and Gold back into a tie with Northern Illinois for second in the MAC West Division. CMU returns to the court on Sunday against the Ball State Cardinals in Muncie, Ind.
