Schuette Named AAU All-American

MOUNT PLEASANT -- Freshman Katie Schuette felt like she had a chance to prove herself at this year’s AAU Junior National Championships, as she prepared to enter her first season as a member of the Central Michigan volleyball team.
The Grand Blanc, Mich. native ran with the opportunity, earning AAU All-America honors after guiding her M-Juniors club team to a fifth-place finish nationally.
“The level of competition is much higher at that level than in high school, so you have to work even harder on the floor,” Schuette said. “I’ve really worked on taking a more aggressive swing this summer, and it has really helped.”
The distinction adds even more prestige to a recruiting class that is already carrying an armful of accolades into its first collegiate season. The six incoming freshmen earned a top-95 ranking from prepvolleyball.com, the third time in the last five years the program has earned a national ranking for its incoming recruits.
For Schuette, who put together an outstanding career at Lake Fenton High School, never earned any form of all-state honors, but she viewed the time with her club team as a chance to show she could play with the best in the nation.
“I came from sort of a smaller high school, so it can be a little tougher to get noticed,” Schuette said. “But in AAU competitions, it doesn’t matter where you’re from, just how you perform. I approached this tournament as an opportunity to show what I’m capable of.”
Schuette, who did earn all-state honors twice in the high jump as a member of the track and field squad, averaged 3.8 kills per set as a senior, piling up 482 on the year. She also tallied 420 digs during her final prep campaign (3.3/set).
The 2009 campaign for Schuette and the rest of the Chippewas opens up with the annual CMU Alumnae match, scheduled for Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. The match will be held in Rose Arena.
The regular season kicks off with a trio of tournaments, including a two-day tournament to open the season at Florida State. The Chippewas will face North Dakota State in the opener, on Aug. 28 at 11:30 a.m.
