MOUNT PLEASANT -- The Central Michigan volleyball team will head to Green Bay, Wis. for its second tournament in as many weekends on Friday.
CMU will face host Green Bay to start the four-team round robin on Friday, before squaring off with Big Ten foe Iowa and South Dakota State on Saturday.
Live stats and live video will be available, courtesy of GreenBayPhoenix.com. Both can be accessed from the CMU volleyball schedule page.
Green Bay is off to a rough start in 2009, starting 0-3 on the year while hitting just .174 as a team.
Iowa has hit the ground running at 3-0 while hitting .217 as a team and holding opponents to a .049 clip, in addition to averaging an impressive 3.50 blocks and 1.60 aces per set.
South Dakota State meanwhile sits at 1-2, hitting .124 while allowing opponents to connect at .172. The Jacks are also averaging 2.23 blocks per set.
The Chippewas are coming off a 1-2 weekend at the season-opening Florida State Invitational. CMU is hitting .185 on the season, while giving up a .221 clip. The Maroon and Gold are also averaging 2.00 blocks per set.
Central’s new-look front line got off to a bit of a slow start in the season’s first two matches, but got progressively better throughout the opening weekend. Kaitlyn Schultz, who earned 2008 Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year honors as a middle blocker, was moved to the outside with promising results.
Lauren Krupsky’s development into one of the league’s better talents has also taken a big step forward, as the junior outside hitter has already piled up 34 kills in 11 sets (3.09) and is hitting .275.
Both sides of the serving game will be a focal point this week for the Chippewas. After leading the MAC in aces the last two seasons, CMU has managed just 0.91 aces thus far and is giving up twice as many (1.82).
The weekend’s opening match against Green Bay is scheduled for 7 p.m., CT. Saturday’s action starts at 11 a.m., CT against Iowa and wraps up against South Dakota State at 4:30 p.m., CT.
