MOUNT PLEASANT -- Another five set loss, the second of the season to Eastern Michigan, snapped a Central Michigan four match winning streak (18-25, 25-20, 25-16, 18-25, 15-13) in Mid-American Conference action at Finch Fieldhouse on Thursday.
The Chippewas (11-12, 5-6 MAC) took advantage of a slow start by the Eagles' (22-6, 9-2 MAC) offense but fell behind 2-1 before forcing the fifth set. CMU is now 0-5 this season in five-set matches, including four losses in league play.
Junior Kaitlyn Schultz finished with a match-high 16 kills and sophomore Val DeWeerd had 15 kills, but the Chippewas hit just .167 as a team, unable to take advantage of holding the Eagles to a .179 mark thanks in part to Lisa Johnson's team-best 16 digs.
The CMU offense struggled until the fourth set, finally breaking through with a .300 hitting percentage en route to evening the match at two sets each, but EMU was able to seal the victor with a block by Kristen Baker and Erin Short for match point in the fifth set.
Rachel Iaquaniello led EMU with 13 kills, and Haley Stein had a match-best 21 digs.
CMU returns to the road to face Kent State on Saturday to wrap up crossover play. The match is slated for 7:30 p.m.
