Chippewas Pick Up Conference Win Over BSU, 3-1

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Central Michigan Chippewas (5-13, 3-7 Mid-American Conference) defeated the Ball State Cardinals (6-13, 2-8 MAC) by a score of 3-1 in the regular season finale for both teams on Sunday.
The Chippewas opened the scoring 4:28 into the match. Sophomore midfielder Erin Dye scored her fifth goal of the season off a penalty corner. Senior forward Pam Seufert and freshman midfielder Simone Lazar each had an assist on the play.
CMU scored its second goal of the first half with 11 minutes left before halftime on a play that was a carbon copy of the first goal. Dye scored her sixth goal of the season off a penalty corner, with assists from Seufert and Lazar.
“I thought we came out strong today,” said CMU head coach Cristy Freese. “Obviously Erin played well on our penalty corners. It was a really good win for us.”
The Cardinals cut the CMU lead to one when they scored their first and only goal of the game with six minutes left in the half. Senior back Elizabeth Blaum found the back of the cage, with an assist from another senior back, Morgan Cloutier.
CMU took a 2-1 lead into halftime and then iced the game with 17:41 left in the game when Seufert scored her second goal of the season. Senior back Kim Sihota got an assist on the goal.
The Chippewas held the edge in shots, 16-8, and in shots on goal, 13-6. CMU also had more penalty corners than BSU, 12-6, including nine penalty corners in the first half.
Dye had 10 shots and nine shots on goal to lead the Chippewa attack. Freshman forward Bailey McKeon had three shots and two shots on goal as well.
Junior goalkeeper Anastasia Netto played all 70 minutes, making five saves and picking up her third win of the season.
“It was an important win. It always feels good to get a win and to score some goals,” said Freese. “We set ourselves up nicely. We are excited to be hosting the conference tournament and we will be ready on Thursday.”
CMU is hosting the MAC Tournament, which starts on Thursday, November 4 and runs through Saturday, November 6. All matches will be played at the CMU Field Hockey Complex.
The games on Thursday and Friday will be at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The MAC Championship game will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The Chippewas will be the No. 4 seed in the field.
