HONOLULU, Hawaii – After a full day of travel, the Central Michigan University men’s basketball team has arrived in Hawaii for the 2010 Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic.
The Chippewas are playing three games in the event and cmuchippewas.com will bring you a daily notebook of the team’s trip.
Wake Up Call: There is a five-hour time difference between Hawaii and Michigan, so the Chippewas began preparing for the time change early in the week. Making the transition more difficult is the fact that CMU’s games are all late Hawaiian time, meaning the players’ internal clocks will think it is the wee hours of the morning during the games. CMU’s games begin at 9:30, 9:30 and 11 p.m. local time. Head coach Ernie Zeigler and the Chippewas conducted three practices back in Mount Pleasant in the middle of the night this week, trying to get the players’ bodies adjusted to the change. On Sunday night and Monday night, the team’s practice started at 10 p.m., while on Tuesday night the Chippewas went at 2 a.m.
Hitting the Road: CMU began its journey after Wednesday’s early morning practice. The team left Rose Center by bus at 7 a.m. and drove to Detroit’s Metro Airport. Central caught a noon flight from DTW to LAX and then flew from LAX to Honolulu. Each flight was five hours in length. CMU arrived in Honolulu around 1 a.m. EST and then grabbed a quick dinner at a restaurant before retiring for the night.
Aloha Chippewas: When CMU arrived at the Honolulu Airport they were greeted by Kaipo, their host. He and his assistant presented the Chippewas with leis made of kukui nuts. The kukui tree is the state tree of Hawaii and it has spiritual significance of hope and renewal. Originally reserved for royalty in ancient times, the kukui nut was worn by the reigning chiefs and Kings of Hawaii, known as Ali’I, during the days of the Hawaiian Monarchy.
Hear the Call: A radio broadcast of all three of CMU’s games can be heard for free on cmuchippewas.com. Former sports information director Don Helinski will call the action.
24 Hours of Hoops: CMU’s final game against Hawaii will air on ESPN as part of the network’s special 24 hours of hoops coverage. The game will air live on Tuesday at 4 a.m. EST (Monday at 11 p.m. HST).
Dotting Another State on the Map: Hawaii represents the 18th different state the Chippewas have visited during Ernie Zeigler’s five seasons as head coach. The Chippewas will visit a total of four new states this season, also adding Alabama, Louisiana and Nevada. The states the Chippewas have visited prior under Zeigler include: Arkansas, California, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee and Wisconsin.
Welcome Back: The Rainbow Classic marks the program’s third overall visit to the state of Hawaii. The Chippewas were in Honolulu in 1987 as Dan Majerle led the Chippewas to a 2-1 record and a buzzer-beater loss to Alabama in the finals of a tournament hosted by Hawaii Pacific. CMU visited Maui in 2003 for the prestigious EA SPORTS Maui Invitational and the Chippewas went 0-3 during that visit.
Military Base Visit: CMU has an off day on Sunday and the team will make a visit to Hickam Air Force Base on the island. There is a CMU Off Campus Center on the base where military personnel and others take classes from CMU. The team will get a tour of the base and then also eat lunch with Michigan military personnel and fellow CMU Off Campus students.
