ATHENS, Ohio -- Robbie Harman became Central Michigan's all-time leading three-point shooter in grand fashion, hitting a career-high nine treys and scoring a career-best 31 points, but the Chippewas fell to the Ohio Bobcats, 89-76, at the Convocation Center on Thursday to wrap up Mid-American Conference crossover action.
Harman tied the mark with 10:23 to play in the first half and broke it at the 7:25 mark, becoming the first player in school history to hit 200-plus three-pointers in his career (208). He now has 79 made threes on the year, the third-highest total in program history, and the nine threes are the second-highest total by a Chippewa in a single contest.
"Unfortunately his effort came in a loss, but I'm extremely proud of him," head coach Ernie Zeigler said. "He came to CMU, he wanted to be a Chippewa, and he worked his way into becoming one of the best shooters to ever play here."
Ohio (13-12, 5-6 MAC) took a 47-44 lead with 16:36 to play, and would never trail again. CMU (11-12, 6-5 MAC) was within one, 51-50, with 14 minutes left, but a 15-4 run gave OU a comfortable cushion and the Chippewas would get no closer than six the rest of the way.
The Chippewas held a 40-37 lead at the break, but the Bobcats' pressure defense forced the Maroon and Gold to use four of their five timeouts in the opening frame.
"They were really looking to trap and push things outside, and we were forced into taking timeouts," Zeigler said. "It made it tough to try and break their momentum when they made their run in the second half."
Harman was 10-for-17 from the floor, 9-for-14 from the arc. Jordan Bitzer was the only other Chippewa in double-figures with 16. Jalin Thomas led CMU with nine boards to go with eight points and a block.
Ohio got 68 combined points from the threesome of Armon Bassett (25), DeVaughn Washington (24) and D.J. Cooper (19).
The Chippewas shot 40 percent from the floor, 52 percent from deep (14-for-27). Ohio connected at 49 percent from the floor, 40 percent from long range (6-for-15). CMU outrebounded OU, 38-31.
The difference in the contest came at the free throw line, where the Bobcats made 32 more trips (35-for-48, 73 percent) than the Chippewas (14-for-16, 88 percent).
"We have to stay together, come back home, regroup and put all our focus into these next six games," Zeigler said.
CMU returns home to face Toledo on Sunday as the back half of a basketball doubleheader at Rose Center. Tipoff is set for approximately 4:30 p.m.
