AKRON, Ohio — Despite four scorers in double figures, Central Michigan dropped a 63-43 contest at Rhodes Arena to Akron on Sunday night.
"Akron did a really nice job of putting us in difficult situations," head coach Ernie Zeigler said. "They had us flustered and things compounded for us. We started to break off and do things on our own. Especially towards the end, we just tried to make things happen that weren't there."
The Chippewas (5-15, 2-5 MAC), trailed the Zips (12-9, 3-4 MAC) 28-18 at halftime before coming out and knocking down four of their first five three-point attempts in the second half.
The Zips responded after nearly each three-point field goal by the Chippewas during the stretch, with CMU cutting the lead to only eight, 40-32, at the 12:55 mark of the second half on Jalin Thomas ' second three of the game.
After a three by Akron's Alex Abreu, CMU pulled the game within seven, 43-36, on a jumper from the right wing by Finis Craddock with 9:51 remaining.
Akron responded by holding the Chippewas to just three field goals over the last nine-plus minutes of the game, finishing the game on a 20-7 run.
The Chippewas shot just 30.4 percent in the game (17-of-56), while the Zips finished the game with a clip of 47.8 from the field.
Derek Jackson led the Chippewas in scoring with 11 points, marking the first time in 20 games that Thomas or freshman Trey Zeigler did not lead the team. Both Thomas and Zeigler scored 10 points, as did Craddock. Thomas led the team with nine rebounds.
Akron was led by sophomore seven-foot center Zeke Marhshall, who finished the game a perfect 5-for-5 from the field, scoring a game-high 16 points, while blocking three shots.
CMU is back in action on Wednesday when they host the Ohio Bobcats on Sports Time Ohio. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
