MOUNT PLEASANT - The Central Michigan field hockey team scored three unanswered goals in the second half, including one from junior midfielder Erin Dye with fewer than five minutes remaining in the match, for a 3-2 win over Miami (OH) on a windy Saturday afternoon at the CMU Field Hockey Complex.
Dye took a cross from sophomore midfielder Simone Lazar along the baseline in the 66th minute to give the Chippewas (6-7, 4-3 MAC) a 3-2 lead, after trailing 2-0 at the half to the Redhawks (5-11, 3-4 MAC). The goal was her fifth of the season.
After surrendering two goals to the Redhawks in the first nine minutes, the Chippewas' defense settled down and did not yield a goal the rest of the way.
The CMU offense kicked into gear in the second half, when freshman forward Cayleigh Immelman scored the first of her two goals of the day on a cross from senior midfielder Paulina Lee along the baseline in the 41st minute, cutting the Miami lead, 2-1.
Immelman struck again eight minutes later on a penalty stroke to tie the game, 2-2. A Miami defender advanced from the goal on consecutive CMU penalty corners, giving the Chippewas a penalty stroke. The goals were her ninth and tenth of the season, respectively.
In total, the Chippewas earned six penalty corners, compared to just two for the Redhawks.
Though the Redhawks outshot the Chippewas, with eight shots on goal compared to five, senior goalkeeper Anastasia Netto kept the Chippewas in the game with six saves, four in the second half.
Immelman led the offensive effort with three shots on goal and two goals, and Dye tallied a goal on two shots on goal.
The Chippewas are back in action tomorrow for senior day at 1 p.m. against Ball State at the CMU Field Hockey Complex. It will be the final home game for seniors Lee and Brooke Sihota.
