MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Kaitlyn Schultz had 20 kills as the Central Michigan volleyball team's comeback effort fell short against Western Michigan, 3-1, Friday night.
The Chippewas (14-8, 7-4) found themselves down 20-18 late in set four. Schultz had four straight points for the Maroon and Gold, and the set was tied at 22. Both teams traded points, but it was the Broncos (20-5, 9-2) who would get two in a row to claim a 28-26 set four win.
"We fell into Western's hands tonight," said head coach Erik Olson. "Overall, we had a lack of aggressiveness in the first two sets. We changed our mental mindset heading into set three, and if it wasn't for a little rough spurt in the fourth set I think we had a good chance to win things."
The night began with WMU jumping out to a 10-8 lead. It would later go on a 4-0 run and push the lead up to 19-14. The Chippewas fought back and cut the lead to one at 22-21, but too many errors gave the Broncos a 25-22 set one win.
Following a 5-0 run WMU took an early 7-3 lead in set two, another Bronco run allowed the visitors to push the lead to 17-10. The Chippewas had no response for the tipped balls of the WMU offense and they fell 25-18.
The third set saw a different CMU team on the floor. The Chippewas grabbed the lead at the 5-4 point following a kill from Kaitlyn McIntyre. They would hold onto that lead the whole set behind McIntyre's nine kills and claim a 25-22 win.
Down 10-9 in the fourth set the Maroon and Gold went on a 4-0 run forcing a WMU timeout. The timeout proved to be worthy as the Broncos tore off a 5-0 run to claim the lead. The Chippewas finished the fourth set with eight total errors as they fell 28-26.
McIntyre finished the night with 18 kills while Danielle Gotham had career high 16. Kelly Maxwell had a match-high 68 assists, while Jenna Coates led the defense with 21 digs.
The Chippewas hit .295 while their opponent hit .326. The Broncos had six players with nine or more kills in the match.
CMU will be home tomorrow night, for senior night, when it hosts Northern Illinois in a 7 p.m. match.
