Box Score
KENT, Ohio - Central Michigan gave up a season-high 26 shots, falling to Kent State in extra time for the second time this season, 2-1.
The Chippewas (8-9, 5-4 MAC) will now have to defeat the MAC leading Ohio Bobcats in their regular season finale Sunday to secure the No. 2 seed in next week's Mid-American Conference Tournament in Athens, Ohio.
The Golden Flashes (7-12, 5-5 MAC) scored just 1:46 into the first overtime of Saturday's match, Carla Johl's fifth goal of the season. The MAC's leading goal scorer Debbie Bell assisted on the play, as Johl deflected a shot by Bell off a penalty corner. Bell also assisted on the game-winning goal of KSU's 4-3 double-overtime win in Mount Pleasant earlier this season.
The Chippewas took control of the match early on a goal just 11:09 into the contest. Senior Paulina Lee found Erin Dye six yards outside the box where the junior found the back of the cage for her eighth goal of the season. The assist was Lee's team-leading ninth of the year.
Kent State countered in the 27th minute, finally beating junior keeper Anastaia Netto on their 15th shot of the contest when Julia Hofmann scored her fifth goal of the season to even the score, 1-1.
The Golden Flashes continued to pepper Netto and the CMU defense with shots throughout the rest of regulation, forcing the junior to make a season and career-high 11 saves and twice in the second half making back-to-back saves. Freshman Jordyn Brengosz also came up with her third defensive save of the season for the Chippewas.
Bell, the nation's active leading goal scorer, fired 11 shots to lead the Golden Flashes, as Hofmann fired five and Rebecca Lee four. Dye fired four of the Chippewas' five shots in the contest, putting three on goal.
CMU now closes the regular season tomorrow afternoon in Athens, Ohio versus the Bobcats. OU is coming off its only conference loss of the season, a 2-1 overtime decision versus Kent State Friday. The match is set for a 1 p.m. start.
