The Chippewas are now 3-8 in overtime games under Ernie Zeigler and have lost six straight. The loss was CMU's first multiple-overtime loss under Zeigler (2-1, all double-OT).
Trey Zeigler recorded his second straight double-double with 22 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. He is the first Chippewa player to record back-to-back double-doubles since Marcus Van recorded consecutive games of 16 points and 13 rebounds against Eastern Michigan and Toledo near the end of the 2009 season.
Derek Jackson's 18 points were one shy of his career-high 19 set at South Alabama last season.
CMU had four players foul out in the contest - Andre Coimbra, Olivier Mbaigoto, Austin McBroom and Zach Saylor.
A total of four players recorded double-doubles in the game, including three from Charlotte.
Zeigler hit the 20-point plateau for the 12th time in his career.
Both meetings between the two schools have now gone into overtime. The only other meeting came in the 1977 NCAA Tournament when Charlotte won in overtime, 91-86, before the 49ers advanced to the Final Four.
After falling down 12-0 at the start, CMU never led in the first half. The Chippewas took their first lead, 41-39, on a Trey Zeigler fast break layup with 13:59 left in regulation. CMU led by as many as 10 in the second half.
CMU led by eight, 56-48, with 8:28 remaining but the Chippewas would get only one field goal the rest of regulation, a 3-pointer by Derek Jackson at the 5:03 mark.
Both teams had double-digit scoring runs in the game - Charlotte a 12-0 run in the first half and CMU an 11-0 run in the second.
Three players for each team logged at least 40 minutes. Zeigler played 45 minutes, Jackson 41 and Mbaigoto 40 for CMU.
Seven of Zach Saylor's nine rebounds this season have been on the offensive glass. His 24 minutes tonight were almost double his previous career high (13 at Northern Illinois in 2010).
