MOUNT PLEASANT - Terrance Owens accounted for 338 total yards and three touchdowns as Toledo defeated Central Michigan, 44-17, at Kelly/Shorts Stadium Friday evening.
Owens finished the night 24-for-32 for 275 yards and two touchdowns while running for another 63 yards and a score to keep the Rockets' (7-4, 6-1 MAC) hopes for a Mid-American Conference West Division title alive.
The Chippewas end the season 3-9 overall for the second-straight season and 2-6 in the MAC.
Toledo's Adonis Thomas put the Rockets on top, 7-0, capping an eight-play, 80-yard drive with a 26-yard touchdown run just 3:25 into the contest. The Chippewas would respond with a scoring drive of their own later in the first quarter however, as Ryan Radcliff found freshman Titus Davis from three yards out with 5:45 remaining.
Another Thomas touchdown gave the Rockets the lead back, 14-7, with 35 seconds remaining in the quarter, but CMU drove the ball all the way to the Toledo 10-yard line with a 35-yard completion to Jarrett Fleming and back-to-back 15-yard penalties on the Rockets. The drive would stall however and the Chippewas would settle for a 21-yard field goal by David Harman to trail, 14-10.
The Rockets continued to pad their lead on the leg of Jeremiah Detmer in the second quarter, as the freshman kicker nailed field goals of 39 and 50 yards to give UT the lead at the half, 20-10.
Owens took over in the second half, as the sophomore threw touchdown passes of 39 and 51 yards to James Green and Bernard Reedy and capped the night with a five-yard touchdown run late in the fourth.
Davis pulled in his second touchdown reception from Radcliff with 7:12 remaining in the game to move into a tie for sixth place on CMU's single-season touchdown reception list. Davis closed the season with two touchdown catches in each of the season's final three games.
Friday marked the final contest for 14 Chippewas, including Mike Petrucci and Jason Chomic, who each finished the game with career highs of 13 and eight tackles respectively.
