MOUNT PLEASANT — For the second time this season, Central Michigan has swept the weekly softball awards for the Mid-American Conference West division.
This week, junior Molly Coldren was named MAC West Player of the Week and sophomore Kara Dornbos was named MAC West Pitcher of the Week. The Chippewas have been awarded five of the six weekly honors they have been eligible for this season.
Coldren (West Bloomfield, Mich./Notre Dame HS) put together her second consecutive solid week at the plate, which included tying CMU's career home run mark with 19. The junior started all seven games, leading the Chippewas to a 5-2 record. She hit her record-tying 19th home run of her career versus South Florida, blasting a three-run shot that provided CMU with its only runs of the game. Coldren finished the week with a .400 (6-for-15) batting average and an .800 slugging percentage while driving in four runs and scoring five more.
Dornbos (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) becomes the third different Chippewa pitcher to earn the weekly honor, joining fellow flame throwers Kari Seddon and Chelsea Sundberg . The sophomore pitched in three of CMU's six wins last week, going 2-1 with an ERA of just 0.76 in 18 1/3 innings. Dornbos struck out 20 batters on the week and gave up just two earned runs. The former MAC All-Freshman selection a year ago pitched her second one-hitter of the season, striking out a career-high eight batters with zero walks in a 1-0 win over Central Connecticut State.
The Chippewas (11-7) are back in action this weekend when they head to the Hoosier Classic for five games in Bloomington, Ind. The tournament will include games versus Loyola, Wright State, in-state rival Michigan State and two games versus host Indiana.
