MOUNT PLEASANT - The Central Michigan volleyball program held its annual Maroon and Gold scrimmage Saturday inside McGuirk Arena, with the Gold squad coming out on top in straight-sets, 3-0.
The Maroon and Gold teams, which saw players alternate from Maroon to Gold depending on the lineup for each set, allowed the coaching staff to see where they stand just six days from their matchup versus the Tigers.
"I was pleased with a lot of play from the players coming off the back up positions," head coach Erik Olson said. "Some of the kids really stepped up. I was looking to build some depth the next couple weeks and we showed we have a couple of gamers that definitely stepped up. We have to continue the development and train harder every day."
Sophomore Kaitlyn McIntyre picked up right where she left off last season when she garnered Mid-American Conference All-Freshman Team honors, leading the way with 10 kills for the Gold squad. Senior Lindsey Dulude followed right behind with eight kills and three blocks while junior Kelly Maxwell dished out 18 assists and had a match-high three aces while playing for the Gold.
Maxwell added 10 assists on the other side of the net during the match, while her freshman counterpart, setter Jordan Timmer, racked up 13 sets for the Maroon and 11 sets for the Gold for a total of 24.
Four freshmen saw their first action in the Maroon and Gold Saturday afternoon as Kristen Reenders, Kalle Mulford, Angelique White and Timmer were able to continue their acclimation process with their teammates.
Mulford shined in her first live action, finishing the match with nine kills and six blocks while splitting time between both teams.
Saturday also gave three alumnae an opportunity to step back on the court for the Maroon squad as libero Lisa Johnson and outside hitters Sarah Warner and Kelly Janisch joined the competition.
CMU will open its regular season next Friday at the Green Bay/Country Inn & Suites Invitation when it plays Auburn at 7 p.m.
