EAST LANSING, Mich. - Junior forward Ellen Riley scored her first goal of the season and the game-winner to take down Pacific, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Michigan State’s Ralph Young Field.
Senior midfielder Erin Dye also netted her seventh goal of the season as the Chippewas (5-6, 1-1 MAC) controlled possession for much of the match and outshot the Tigers (3-8, 0-1 NorPac) 12-3 with a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. The win is the second in a row for the Chippewas, and pulls the team within one win of .500 on the season.
Facing a 1-1 tie in the 46th minute, Riley was in the perfect position to redirect a pass from junior defender Skylar VanNatta just outside the cage through traffic and into the goal. VanNatta, who assisted the goal, had gathered the rebound off a shot by junior forward Bailey McKeon.
Senior midfielder Erin Dye scored for the second day in a row with a goal in the 20th minute to give CMU a 1-0 lead. Dye took control of the ball in traffic just five yards out from goal and took a shot that found the back of the cage, assisted by McKeon.
Dye is now just three goals shy of tying her total from last season with 10.
The lead lasted for four minutes before Pacific answered back by converting on a penalty stroke by Emily Tregoning in the 24th minute to tie the match, 1-1. Tregoning lifted the ball high over senior goalkeeper Anastasia Netto to find the upper portion of the cage.
Neither team would score again until Riley’s goal in the 46th minute.
Dye led the way with six shots, three on goal. McKeon took three shots with two on goal, while sophomore forward Cayleigh Immelman and Riley each recorded a shot on goal.
The Chippewas continue MAC play next weekend with a match at Missouri State on Saturday, Oct. 6.
