MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The Central Michigan volleyball team fell to Western Michigan, 3-1, Friday night in McGuirk Arena, dropping its season record to 7-10 overall and 2-3 in the Mid-American Conference.
The Broncos won the first set, 25-20, and the second, 26-24, before the Chippewas claimed the third, 25-19. WMU sealed the victory with a 27-25 win in the fourth.
"I think Western did a great job of making us play," CMU coach Erik Olson said. "They brought up more balls than they typically do. It was an outstanding match by them defensively."
The Broncos tallied 63 digs in the match, including 23 from freshman outside hitter Sierra Hubbard-Niel.
"The small things were the difference in the match, and we're right there," Olson said. "We had a couple leads in the second and fourth sets that we didn't close out. But we're a young team that's trying to get better. I feel like we let (Western Michigan) steal this one a little bit, but I still like what we're doing."
Freshman outside hitter Taylor Robertson led CMU with 19 kills, recording a career-high hitting percentage of .485.
"I just tried to stay mentally focused," Robertson said. "(Setter) Kylie (Copple) did a great job of putting me in great situations. The entire team did their job tonight and it all really ties together, so I accredit all my success to my teammates."
Senior outside hitter Kaitlyn McIntyre had 13 kills and 10 digs on the night, while Copple had 54 assists.
Next up, the Chippewas play host to Northern Illinois on Saturday. The Huskies, a 3-2 winner over Eastern Michigan on Friday, is 12-7 overall and leads the MAC West at 5-0.
"We're looking to execute better. That's pretty much it," Olson said. "I think that our defense has been very strong. That needs to continue. And I also like how our offense is starting to come back. It's really fun. So we're going to put (Friday night) behind us and have a great match (Saturday night)."
