MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Central Michigan Football announced today that it has accepted an invitation to play in the 2014 Popeyes Bahamas Bowl.
The Chippewas will take on Conference USA opponent Western Kentucky on Wednesday, Dec. 24, at 12 p.m. The game takes place at Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium in Nassau, Bahamas and ESPN will televise the game to a national audience.
"We are thrilled to take part in the inaugural Popeyes Bahamas Bowl," CMU Athletic Director Dave Heeke said. "It is a fantastic opportunity for our football program and Central Michigan University. It is great to see our student-athlete rewarded with a chance to play in the Bahamas against a strong opponent in Western Kentucky. I want to thank Mid-American Conference Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher and his staff for their hard work in this process."
This is CMU's sixth bowl appearance in the past nine years. The Chippewas last appearance was in the 2012 Little Caesars Pizza Bowl, defeating Western Kentucky, 24-21. That is the lone meeting between these two teams.
"I want to thank the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl for the invitation to be a part of its inaugural game," head football coach Dan Enos said. "Playing in our sixth bowl game in the past nine seasons is a great accomplishment for this program. Western Kentucky is a great team and I expect a hard fought game when we face off on Dec. 24. I know our players are extremely excited to have this opportunity and can't wait to get going with bowl camp later this week."
This is the inaugural Popeyes Bahamas Bowl. It is the first postseason FBS bowl game outside of either the United States or Canada between two U.S. teams since the Jan. 1, 1937 Bacardi Bowl in Havana, Cuba, a 7-7 tie between Auburn and Villanova.

CMU is extremely excited to accept the bid to play in the 2014 Popeyes Bahamas Bowl. This is a tremendous honor for our football program and a terrific opportunity to showcase our entire university on a national stage. Unfortunately, CMU will not receive sufficient revenue from its appearance to cover all of its travel expenses for the football team.
Whether you can make it the Bahamas or will be watching at home on ESPN, you can play an active role in creating a first-class bowl experience for the Chippewas by making a donation to the Bowl Game Championship Fund!
All individuals donating $100 or more will help secure four tickets that will be distributed to local charity groups that will provide children an opportunity to attend the bowl game.
In addition to this, the Chippewa Athletic Fund will also credit new donors (i.e. did not participate in 2014/15) with Chippewa Club membership at the level that corresponds with a donation. If you are a current Chippewa Club member, a donation to the Bowl Game Championship Fund will be added to your 2015/16 membership level once renewed.
