PALO ALTO, Calif. - Central Michigan continued its west-coast field hockey trip Friday, falling to eighth-ranked Stanford, 5-0.
The loss, which left the Chippewas 1-6, came on the heels of a 5-0 loss to Pacific on Thursday. CMU plays its third and final game of the trip Sunday at UC Davis, then opens Mid-American Conference play on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Ball State.
UC Davis (1-5) dropped a 5-2 decision to California on Friday.
"Stanford is a tough team," CMU coach Cristy Freese. "We did some better things than we did (Thursday). It is hard to measure against a Pac 12 team."
The Cardinal (7-1), which was coming off a 1-0 loss to seventh-ranked Albany, held the Chippewas without a shot or a penalty corner.
Stanford registered 16 shots and four penalty corners. CMU goalkeeper Sadie Lynn Reynolds made 10 saves. Cardinal netminder Dulcie Davies, who entered the game as the nation's leader in goals against average (0.42) and save percentage (.914), posted her fifth shutout of the season.
Maddie Secco scored two goals for Stanford, which led 3-0 at halftime.
"These games have helped us work out some kinks that will help us get better for conference play," Freese said.
