MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Central Michigan saw its two-game home win streak come to end with a 2-1 overtime loss to Northern Illinois on Friday afternoon in the Chippewas' MAC opener. The difference was a free kick goal from 20-yards out by the Huskies' Lauren Gierman, her second score of the game, just over one minute into the extra frame.
With the loss, Central slips to 2-6-1 overall while the Huskies improve to 3-6-0. On Sunday, the Chippewas will face off against rival Western Michigan (7-2-0) at the CMU Soccer Complex. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
"It's always good to open the MAC season at home" said CMU head coach Peter McGahey. "There were some positives that we can take away from today."
CMU outshot NIU, 14-7, and set up multiple scoring opportunities throughout the match.
Junior midfielder Kaelyn Korte contributed a strong performance, accounting for CMU's lone goal, her first of the 2014 season. Emily Cooksey crossed a pass from the left wing into a crowded box, where Jamie Rademacher had a touch before Korte put a point blank shot into an open net.
"Kaelyn Korte picking up her first goal of the season, I thought was a good goal and was well-earned; she's doing a lot of work for us in the midfield." McGahey said.
CMU maintained possession for much of the game, especially in the second half, and connected on the predominance of its passes.
"I thought we showed good maturity and composure to get back into it after their goal in the first half," said McGahey. "Overall it's a building performance."
