ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Central Michigan field hockey team, searching for its first win of the season, will have to wait a little longer after falling to the 17th-ranked Michigan, 6-0, Sunday at Ocker Field.
The Wolverines scored three goals in the first 10 minutes of the game and added three more in the second half to fend off the Chippewas.
"I think we had a shaky first ten minutes, and a shaky last ten minutes, but in between that I thought we settled down," head coach Christy Freese said. "We were playing a very good Michigan team and I think they executed very well."
The Chippewas (0-4) were outshot 16-2, with most of the pressure coming in the second half, when the Wolverines attempted 13 shots. The Wolverines scored on all three of their first-half shot attempts.
"I think they changed some things from the first half, in the second half they seemed to be looking for more direct shots, getting the shots off sooner, and that's why they had more shots in the second half," CMU coach Cristy Freese said.
Freese said her team played Michigan better than the score would reflect.
"The effort was good, we're working hard and putting forth a good effort out there," she said, "but we are disappointed in the score. We don't feel good about that score but we just have to move forward and look towards our next opponent."
Sadie Lynn Reynolds made five saves in goal in taking the loss. Maude Stalars and Cayleigh Immelman recorded shots for the Chippewas.
Leslie Smith scored two goals to lead Michigan (2-2), and Ainsley McCallister had three assists.
The Chippewas return to Mount Pleasant to play host to Virginia Commonwealth (2-2) on Friday, Sept. 12 at 3 p.m. CMU returns to Ann Arbor on Sunday, Sept. 14 to face Providence (2-2) at U-M.
