MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Two games into its critical three-game weekend, the Central Michigan field hockey team is still seeking its first victory.
The Chippewas were outshot, 20-3, Friday in falling to Ohio, 3-1, in a Mid-American Conference game at the CMU Field Hockey Complex. The loss dropped the Chippewas to 0-10, 0-2 MAC. The Bobcats are 5-4, 1-0.
CMU plays host to Kent State in a conference game on Sunday at noon. The Flashes, 2-6, 1-0, were scheduled to play at Indiana on Friday afternoon.
The Chippewas fell to Pacific, 3-0, on Thursday. The Bobcats scored 49 seconds into Friday's contest, then made it 2-0 less than seven minutes later.
"I don't think it was legs as much as it was heads," CMU coach Molly Pelowski said. "We've got to think a little bit more about what we have to do. Sunday's important, it's important for us in the conference and our standing and in thinking about MAC Tournament play.
"We really need to lock it in and focus on what we need to do. I think Kent State's a beatable team."
The Chippewas spoiled Ohio's shutout bid when Kaysie Gregory scored with just over two minutes remaining. Kianne Hinkle assisted on the goal, which came off a penalty corner. It was Gregory's team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Ohio finished with an 11-2 edge in penalty corners.
"We did do some good things today," Pelowski said. "Unfortunately it's not reflected in the score. We need to play better. Our press is working, we're starting to create a little bit more, we just have to stick to the game plan. We need to execute the game plan.
"When you're trying to find out what your identity is, you're going to make some mistakes along the way. We know what we need to do it just comes down to the execution."
"Winning makes everyone feel good. It's about finding the small wins for us and every game we're coming away with positive things that we can do. We need to get that win so we can get some confidence under our belt."
