MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Fans can get their first look at the 2015-16 Central Michigan wrestling team on Sunday (2 p.m.) with the annual Maroon & Gold scrimmage at McGuirk Arena.
The event serves as more than a step in determining the lineup heading into the season-opening Eastern Michigan Duals/Open on Nov. 7.
"We're more interested in looking at how the young guys perform in front of a crowd for the first time," said Tom Borrelli, who is beginning his 25th year as the Chippewas' coach. "We try to gauge people's composure in competition. It's kind of a dress rehearsal for our first dual meet."
The matchups (maroon team member listed first): 125 pounds, Carter Ballinger vs. Brent Fleetwood; 133, Corey Keener vs. Kyle Noonan; 141, Zach Horan vs. Adam Nichols; 149, Mason Smith vs. Justin Oliver; 157, Logan Parks vs. Luke Smith; 174, Mike Ottinger vs. CJ Brucki; 184, Jordan Ellingwood vs. Austin Severn; 197, Tyrus Kemp vs. Jackson Lewis; 285, Newton Smerchek vs. Adam Robinson.
There will be no match at 165.
Five Chippewas who will wrestle on Sunday - Horan, Keener, Smith, Ottinger and Ellingwood - are past NCAA Championships qualifiers.
