MOUNT PLESANT, Mich. -- Every volleyball team in the Mid-American conference has something to prove at this point in the season.
The Central Michigan volleyball team found that out first-hand, falling to Buffalo in five sets Saturday night. The loss dropped the Chippewas to 10-13, 5-5 in the MAC. Buffalo i9s 6-17, 5-6.
The Chippewas started the night off with a strong 25-20 victory in set one. CMU dropped sets two and three, 25-23, 30-28.
The Chippewas were able to rally in set four, 25-18, to force a decisive fifth set.
CMU came close in set five but were bested, 15-13.
"That was tough obviously," associate head coach Theresa Beeckman said. "We try not to play just for the outcome of the game, I think in the loss we got a ton better.
"I'm so impressed with how we played with no fear. They were in it to win it."
Despite being on the losing end, CMU out-hit Buffalo recording a .162 hitting percentage compared to the .093 posted by The Bulls.
Sophomore outside hitter Jordan Bueter led the Chippewas with 17 kills and 16 digs. Jessica Meichtry added 14 kills.
Senior middle blocker Kalle Mulford had great in stepping up with the absence of injured teammate Angie White. Mulford had 12 kills on a .308 hitting percentage and had seven blocks.
"I knew going into this weekend that Angie was going to be out," Mulford said. "When she is out we just have to step up and do what we can. She (White) is always there for me on the bench and I couldn't have done it without her tonight."
CMU junior Kathia Sanchez had 50 assists from the setter position.
Cassie Shado had 15 kills to lead Buffalo.
The Chippewas will return to MAC play next weekend when they play host to Western Michigan on Friday and Northern Illinois on Saturday.
