Athens, Ohio. — Nothing comes easy in collegiate volleyball, and it didn't get any easier for the Central Michigan volleyball team Saturday evening.
A Chippewas team vying for one of eight spots in the Mid-American Conference tournament was swept by Ohio, 3-0.
CMU, 11-16 overall and 6-8 in the MAC, is tied with Buffalo for seventh place in the overall league standings. Ohio, 21-6, 11-3, shares the MAC East lead with Kent State.
The Chippewas dropped the opening set, 25-18. A valiant effort in set two came up short, as Ohio took the set, 25-23. The Bobcats took set three, 25-20, to complete the sweep.
"They were just a really good team and they played a really clean game," CMU associate head coach Theresa Beeckman said. "That being said I feel like we made some mistakes tonight that really hurt us. We need to clean up our play a little bit, I honestly feel we can compete with anyone with cleaner play."
Sophomore outside hitter Jordan Bueter led the Chippewas in kills with 12. Taylor Robertson had 11.
Junior setter Kathia Sanchez totaled 30 assists on the night, while freshman libero Jamison Wolffis brought up 17 digs to lead the Chippewas, who play at Toledo next Friday and then at Ball State on Saturday.
CMU can clinch a tournament spot with a victory in either match. The Chippewas defeated both the Rockets and the Cardinals earlier this season at McGuirk Arena.
"Our mindset is good going into the last two games," Beeckman said. "Our goal is the same: We want to make the tournament, be as healthy as possible.
"We are just playing the game. Yes we beat them this season, but we were at home and the circumstances were different. The MAC is the MAC, all the teams are good this year and we can't take anyone lightly. I think the main thing with these teams is that we are more familiar with them now."
Mallory Salis had 15 kills to pace Ohio.
