CLEARWATER, Fla. - Rachael Knapp fired a one-hitter and Maison Kalina homered Thursday as the Central Michigan softball team topped Penn, 4-0, in the nightcap to earn a doubleheader split in the Michelle Smith Tournament, hosted by South Florida.
Penn won the opener, 3-1. The Chippewas (6-11) are scheduled to play Quinnipiac and Lehigh on Friday.
A one-out single in the first inning was the only hit Knapp surrendered to the Quakers (6-5). She struck out seven, walked two and hit one batter.
Leadoff hitter Lacy Tolfree led the Chippewas at the plate with two hits, an RBI, and two stolen bases.
Trista Cox and Taylor Lewallen added one RBI apiece for CMU, which collected seven hits and backed Knapp with error-free defense.
Hanna Warren surrendered six hits, walked one and struck out two in taking the loss in the opener.
CMU finished with three hits, all singles.
