CLEARWATER, Fla. - Junior Katelyn Rentschler homered and freshman pitcher Taylor Weaver struck out six Friday as the Central Michigan softball team defeated Quinnipiac, 4-1, in their first game of the day at the Michelle Smith Tournament, hosted by South Florida.
The Chippewas rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh but came up short, 3-2, to Lehigh in their second game of the day.
The Chippewas close their spring break Florida trip on Saturday with games against Rutgers (9 a.m.) and Yale (11:15 a.m.).
CMU (7-12) posted 16 hits in its two games on Friday, nine against Quinnipiac.
Weaver went the distance, allowing five hits and walking one. Quinnipiac (2-11) spoiled Weaver's shutout bid with an unearned run in the sixth inning.
The Chippewas staked Weaver to a 3-0 lead after two innings on a Maison Kalina RBI single in the first inning. The Chippewas pushed across two more in the second on back-to-back singles by Sara Hansen and Taylor Lewallen and two Bobcat errors.
Rentschler homered leading off the sixth.
Kalina and Trista Cox finished with two hits apiece, and Kristen Kuhlman doubled to lead CMU at the plate.
The Chippewas got a two-run single from Karly Hansen with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning against Lehigh (11-3) to close to 3-2, but they couldn't get the equalizer. The final out of the game came on a play at the plate.
Sophomore Rachael Knapp allowed eight hits, struck out four and walked two in taking the loss. The Chippewas did not commit an error in the game.
Cox and Lacy Tolfree finished with two hits apiece.
