Chippewas Win 18 Events at Oakland

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. -- The Central Michigan men's and women's track & field teams had a combined 18 first-place finishes Saturday at the Oakland University Invitational.
Meanwhile, Nate Ghena led a contingent of Chippewa distance runners at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic with a win in the men's 5,000-meter run.
Ghena's time was 14 minutes, 25.36 seconds. Also for CMU at the Bison, Ben Wynsma was second in the men's 3,000 steeplechase in 9:19.44, while Kelly Schubert finished third in the women's 5,000-meter run in 16:53.32.
At the Oakland Invitational, The CMU women's team earned 10 firsts, while the men's team brought home eight.
"Based on the weather and time of year, I thought it was just a good overall meet for both genders," said Mark Guthrie, CMU's director of track & field/cross country.
CMU's Tina Davis won the women's 100-meter dash in 12.24 seconds. Teammate Diamond Hamilton was second in 12.29.
Hamilton topped Davis in the 200, winning in 25.09. Davis finished third in 25.53.
CMU's Ravyn Baxter won the women's 400 in 56.51 seconds, while the Chippewas' Lexi Mielke was third in 59.49. The Chippewas' Kelsey Ross won the 800 in 2:14.82.
In the 400-meter hurdles, CMU's Bridget Doughty won with a time of 1:00.68, edging teammate Emma Fishnick, who placed second.
CMU's women's 4x100-meter relay team took first place with a time of 47.09. The team comprised Hamilton, Davis, Markala Goodson and Baxter.
CMU's Rebekah Petty, Shaya Wilkerson, Kayla Marshall and Kyleigh Young were victorious in field events.
Petty won the pole vault with a height of 3.53 meters, Wilkerson won the triple jump (11.92), Marshall took the long jump (5.42 meters), and Young won the javelin (36.78).
For the CMU men, Lorenzo Wells, Malik Peacock and Tahshon Reese put together a top-three sweep in the 100. Wells won with a time of 10.82; Peacock finished second in 10.97; and Reese was third in 10.99.
The Chippewas also swept the top three spots in the 400. Malik Vasquez won in a personal-best 47.88, followed by second-place finisher Erick Huertas (48.18), and Clay Holman, who finished third in 48.68.
Huertas also won the 200 in 22.25 seconds, while CMU's Monte Scott won the 3,000 steeplechase in 9:47.55.
Vasquez, Ziemowit Dutkiewicz, Quincy Briggs and Ja'Corey Lipsey comprised CMU's 4x400 relay squad, which won in 3:19.04.
CMU's Matt Mueller won the high jump at 2.00 meters, followed by teammates Aaron Taylor and Melvin Harris.
The Chippewas' Ryan Vincent won the pole vault (4.42 meters), and Brandon McCleese won the men's javelin (55.44 meters)
Next weekend, the Chippewas will travel to Terra Haute, Ind., to compete in the three-day Gibson Invitational, hosted by Indiana State.
