EUGENE, Ore. -- Central Michigan's Devene Brown earned Second Team All-America honors Saturday with her ninth-place finish in the women's discus at the NCAA Track and Field Championships at Oregon's Hayward Field.
Brown, a junior, became the first CMU female track & field athlete to earn All-America recognition since Milica Kulidzan (javelin) in 2012, and just the seventh overall.
Brown, who hails from Kingston, Jamaica, is the first female in school history to All-America honors in the discus.
Brown's best toss measured 178 feet, 7 inches, just 8 inches shy of her school record in the event. Shelbi Vaughan, a junior from Texas A&M, won with a throw of 201-5.
The top eight finishers in each event earn First Team All-America honors; the second eight are Second Team. The eighth-place finishers, Alexandra Collatz of Southern California, measured at 181-8.
"She threw unbelievably well," CMU throwing coach John Ridgway said. "A season-best throw and almost a lifetime-best throw. To make the national final, it was incredible to watch. I was really proud of her."
"Really, this is the best I think I've ever seen her throw. Devene, you could tell she was extremely excited to compete in the final. She's already said excited to come back and compete next year. A fantastic experience and Eugene is a great place to throw."
