FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The Central Michigan volleyball team opened its 2015 season Friday evening with a 3-1 loss to the host team in the Indiana-Purdue-Ft. Wayne Invitational.
The Mastodons bested the Chippewas with victories in the first set, 31-29, and the third and fourth sets, 25-17 and 25-22. CMU took the second set, 25-20.
The Chippewas are scheduled to play Eastern Illinois Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and conclude the tournament with a match against Illinois Chicago at 4:30 p.m.
Sophomore Jordan Bueter led the Chippewas on Friday with 16 kills, while Taylor Robertson had 12, and Jessica Meichtry finished with 11. Setter Kathia Sanchez tallied 33 assists.
Freshman Jamison Wolffis lead CMU defensively with 17 digs. Bueter finished with 15.
Somer Johnson and Sarah Heckman led the Mastodons with 21 and 10 kills respectively.
Central Michigan's hitting percent was .203 in the contest. IPFW finished at .269 percent.
"We lost the serve-and-pass game," CMU coach Erik Olson said. "I was impressed with our surges in point scoring, but ultimately our sideout percentage in sets three and four were not good enough for the win. We will get back after it tomorrow morning against Eastern Illinois."
