CMU Volleyball Splits on Day 1 at Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. — The Central Michigan volleyball team finished 1-1 Friday, in its opening matches of the Bulldog Showdown at Fresno State University.
The Chippewas (3-5) battled Cal State Fullerton (0-7) in their opening match, emerging with a five-set victory.
CMU took the first and third sets, 25-12 and 25-23. The Titans fought back with 25-19 and 25-18 wins in the second and fourth sets, respectively. The Chippewas put the match away in the fifth set, 15-11.
It marked the second time this season that CMU has won a five-setter after going winless in such matches in 2014-15.
Senior middle blocker Angie White led the charge for CMU, finishing with 15 kills. Jordan Bueter and Kalle Mulford finished with 14, and 12 kills, respectively.
Setter Kathia Sanchez tallied 42 assists and Jamison Wolffis recorded 18 digs to lead the Chippewas defensively.
Central Michigan fell to Sacramento State (7-1) in its second match of the afternoon, 3-1.
After dropping the opening set, 25-20, CMU looked sharp in set number two downing the Hornets, 25-14.
The Chippewas could not maintain the momentum, as they fell in sets three and four, 25-22, 26-24.
Bueter registered 17 kills in the loss. Taylor Robertson contributed 12.
Sanchez recorded 24 assists before leaving the game in the second set with an apparent leg injury. Freshman Marissa Grant had 11 assists as her replacement.
The Chippewas will close out the tournament on Saturday, facing UC Riverside at 1 p.m., then host Fresno State at 10:30 p.m.
