DEKALB, Ill. — The Central Michigan volleyball team began its Mid-American Conference schedule with a loss Friday, falling to Northern Illinois, 3-1.
The Chippewas (5-9) took set one, 25-22. The Huskies (5-8) captured sets two, three and four, 25-10, 25-20 and 25-13.
"We played pretty well in set one and just kind of lost it," CMU coach Erik Olson said. "We started to struggle in transition and with our distribution."
CMU struggled with accuracy and efficiency throughout the match. The Chippewas hitting percentage was just .122 and they committed 31 hitting errors.
NIU posted a .295 hitting percentage and committed just 12 errors.
"We just looked like a young team tonight," Olson said. " We made way too many mistakes, the environment was tough and I think we lost a lot a momentum in the second (set) and couldn't pull ourselves out of it."
Sophomore outside hitter Jordan Bueter led CMU with 16 kills and 13 digs, while Taylor Robertson and Jessica Meichtry recorded 11 and 10 kills respectively.
Junior Kathia Sanchez tallied 32 assists from the setter position. Senior Angie White had five blocks.
Outside hitter T'ara Austin totaled 19 kills for The Huskies.
The Chippewas will have a quick turnaround as they travel to Kalamazoo to take on Western Michigan in a MAC match at 7 p.m. Saturday. The Broncos (5-11) defeated Eastern Michigan in four sets in their conference opener on Friday.
