WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Central Michigan field hockey team's search for its first win of the season continued Sunday, as the Chippewas fell to William & Mary, 6-1, in a non-league match.
The Chippewas (0-4) will return to action next weekend, as they travel to Evanston, Ill. to take on Northwestern (2-2) on Saturday, Sept. 12, and Drexel (0-4) on Sunday, Sept. 13. Both games are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Northwestern is ranked 10th.
William & Mary is 3-1.
"One of the good things is is that we have yet to be shut out by any of our opponents this year, so it's not from a lack of effort on our part " said first-year CMU coach Molly Pelowski.
The Chippewas fell behind early, conceding three goals in the first half.
"We just need to be more aggressive and work on our ability to pass and receive, and convert on the corner entry," Pelowski said.
Pippin Saunders scored two goals and registered an assist to lead the Tribe.
Senior Kaysie Gregory scored the Chippewas' goal, her team-leading fourth of the season.
"Kaysie Gregory played well today," said Pelowski. "She is always very consistent for us, one of our team leaders and probably our biggest offensive threat."
CMU goalkeeper Sadie Lynn Reynolds made 10 saves.
"I thought Sadie Lynn Reynolds made some great saves today and kept us in game," said Pelowski.
William and Mary outshot the Chippewas, 26-7, with 16 shots on goal compared to four by CMU.
"We're getting better, I think our play is improving, the effort is there we just need to continue to improve on the things we've been working on in practice," Pelowski said.
