Scott Cousino placed second in the men's 800-meter run Friday as the Central Michigan track and field teams opened the indoor season at two meets.
Cousino, a junior from Clarkston, finished runner-up in 1 minute, 54.40 seconds in the 800 at the Grand Valley State Holiday Classic in Allendale. David Jones of Grand Valley was first in 1:54.13.
Cousino was one of four Chippewas, all distance runners, who competed at Grand Valley.
Five other Chippewas, all multi-eventers, participated in the Saginaw Valley State Holiday Classic in University Center. Several other CMU student-athletes, primarily sprinters and field event athletes, are scheduled to compete on Saturday at Saginaw Valley.
No team scores are kept at either event.
At Saginaw Valley, CMU's Mikaela Grant, April Micheaux and Haley Nugent finished second, third and fourth, respectively, in the women's pentathlon.
CMU's Joseph Seghi and Nicholas Malliaras competed in four events in the men's heptathlon at Saginaw Valley.
The final three events in the heptathlon, the 60-meter hurdles, the pole vault, and the 1,000-meter run, are scheduled for Saturday.
Grant, a freshman, finished with 3,310 points; Micheaux, a junior, totaled 3,152; while Nugent, a freshman, finished with 2,736.
Erica Mudd, formerly of Miami (Ohio) and competing unattached, was first with 3,617. Mudd won the 60-meter hurdles, the high jump, and the long jump, and she placed second in the shot put. She was fourth in the 800.
Grant placed second in the long jump, the 800, and the high jump, was third in the 60, and fourth in the shot put.
Micheaux won the shot put with a toss of 40 feet, 6 inches. She was second in the 60 hurdles, fourth in both the high jump and in the long jump, and fifth in the 800.
Nugent's best finishes were a pair of thirds, one in the shot put, the other in the 800.
Seghi, a junior, won the 60 in 7.14 seconds, while Malliaras, a senior, was second in 7.19.
Seghi was third in the shot put and sixth in the long jump; Malliaras was third in the long jump and sixth in the shot put. Seghi and Malliaras tied for sixth in the high jump.
Also at Grand Valley, CMU's Silas DeKalita placed ninth and Mark Beckmann was 19th in the men's 5,000, and Kelly Schubert was ninth in the women's 3,000.
